Why I chose to draw the line against living with obesity
I decided to have surgery after I went to the initial doctor visit with my mom [who was going to have bariatric surgery]. I was really going to support her and was just going through the motions for myself. During the visit, I mentioned I suffered from acid reflux. I was living with the pain on a daily basis, especially after both pregnancies. It had become normal for me.
The doctor suggested that I have an endoscopy to see if there were any issues. I received a call from the nurse practitioner stating that they found Barrett's esophagus during my endoscopy. I had no idea what that was. After her explanation, I found out that I had precancerous cells on my esophagus. That was when I decided to draw the line and do something about my health. Since I have two small children, I couldn't sign up fast enough [for the REALIZE Band].
Eighteen months and 61 pounds later, I am so happy and grateful that I went through with the surgery. It's one of the best decisions I have ever made!
How my life has changed
My life has changed in many ways since my surgery. I am healthier, faster, and stronger. I sleep better, and my back hurts less. I went back to teaching kindergarten full time this fall, and I was very worried about moving so many boxes and setting up my classroom. I have been very surprised at how well I feel. My classroom is far from everything at the school, so we do a lot of walking, and I feel great. My back hasn't hurt once, and I'm never out of breath.
The biggest changes have been within my own family. We are eating healthier, and everyone in my family is eating smaller portions. We are also talking more about foods that are healthy or unhealthy and limiting our sweets. It's amazing how quickly my children adapted to our new lifestyle. Plus, they are happier that I am more active and able to play more without becoming winded and tired. The REALIZE Band has made such a difference in my life and in the lives of my family.
One of the most exciting events that happened this year was our trip to Disney World. We went about 2 years ago when I was at my heaviest, and I was tired and uncomfortable for the entire trip. This time I was able to walk faster and push the double stroller, with 90 pounds of kiddos inside, and I felt great. I had no issues buckling the seat belt on the plane or getting on rides. The best was in the evenings when the trams were crowded. I could easily scoot over to make room or stand up—and still had energy to carry one of the kids back to the hotel room.
